Seasonal Pest Control Tips: What to Watch Out for Each Time of Year
Pests are seasonal—and understanding when and where they're most active is key to effective control. Whether you're a seasoned technician or just starting out, knowing what to expect each season across different regions of the U.S. gives you the upper hand.
Spring: Awakening and Breeding Season
As temperatures rise, pests emerge from winter hiding to mate and feed. In the Northeast and Midwest, you'll see a surge in ants, termites, and stinging insects like wasps. In the South, mosquitoes start breeding early due to warmer weather and standing water. Now’s the time for inspections—especially around foundations, attics, and basements.
Summer: Peak Pest Activity
This is prime time for bugs and rodents. In humid Southeast regions, mosquito populations explode, along with cockroaches and fire ants. Western states see an increase in wasps, spiders, and even scorpions in desert areas. Rodents in urban areas are more active at night, foraging for food in the heat.
Fall: Seeking Shelter
Cooler temps mean pests start looking for warmth—and your clients’ homes are the perfect target. In the North and Central U.S., rodents like mice and rats begin moving indoors. Stink bugs and boxelder bugs are common fall invaders, especially in Mid-Atlantic areas. Prevention education is crucial here: sealing entry points and maintaining proper storage practices.
Winter: Indoor Invaders
In colder regions, many pests go dormant—but not all. Rodents remain a big issue nationwide, particularly in densely populated cities and suburban homes. In warmer parts of the Southwest and Southeast, termites, ants, and roaches stay active indoors. This is a great time for technicians to focus on interior monitoring and ongoing maintenance.
Tip: Know Your Zone
Understanding the seasonal behavior of pests specific to your region allows for smarter scheduling, better customer education, and more effective control methods.
**Always follow local, state, and federal laws when applying pest control products. Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and strictly adhere to all product label instructions—the label is the law.
